Stuart Maconie's 'The Empire' airs tonight

The ever excellent Stuart Maconie is on BBC 1 North West tonight (and on the BBC iPlayer later on) with a fascinating documentary, 'The Empire', part of BBC's 'Civilisations Stories' strand.   Stuart takes the viewer on a journey from the North West to the World, by way of mummies, circus animals and art, and details how these discoveries have shaped our towns and cities.      

The programme airs at 7.30pm and will be available on the iplayer shortly after.
